Record Redesign Play

GRAPHIC DESIGN
For fun and exercise - I redesigned some album covers for recently released records that I like. I do them when I can and try to work quickly on them - spending only a few hours max. I’ll add more as they come to me!

Accent Entertainment is one of Canada’s most successful independent film and television production companies. I worked with them on their brand and designed a new website with an easy to use custom CMS. They wanted to communicate a feminine aesthetic - but not “girly”. I was asked to look to 80s VHS tapes, zine culture, and retro California graphic design for inspiration. For the website - they wanted it to look great on mobile devices, it had to be easy to update, and have a design that highlights their work - displaying it in a way that is simple and easy to navigate.

The Living Architecture Systems Group wanted to redesign their website to help establish a unique brand - setting it appart from its sister organization PBAI. The brief called for a site that is easy to use for both finding information and encouraging contributions from more partners and members of the group. It had to be versatile and dynamic enough to show current projects as they’re happening - with an easy to use CMS. The user-experience of the original site was deemed too passive and they wanted a more dynamic and user-friendly space for publishing the LASG’s on-going work and research - hopefully encouraging stream leaders to interact. Another main goal was to provide an educational resource for others - a site that can be searched and referenced by students, academics, and other interested parties.

Full case study coming soon - please have a look at the new site design here.

2014 — 2017

In June 2014, I joined the Customer Communications department to work on ttc.ca and other design projects.

Here, I successfully lead UI/UX projects - as well as regular maintenance, content creation and management - on ttc.ca.

Shortly after, I was added to the newly formed Design and Wayfinding department. The first true in-house design team in TTC history – where we worked to strengthen the brand in support of the corporate Five-Year plan. Other projects included wayfinding, map design, annual reports and marketing campaigns. Most recently, I managed all the design requirements associated with the implementation of PRESTO within the TTC system.

In developing this campaign we asked:
  • What does connection mean to you?
  • What does the line 1 extension mean to you?
  • How will you connect to the line 1 extension?
  • How do we get the public excited about the line 1 extension?

The design charrette revealed some key concepts that we used to direct our campaign development.

Opportunity / Memory / Family / Growth / Future / Access / Adventure / Inclusion

This was the basis for further discussion where we landed on the tagline - "Line 1 will get you there" - and a concept for communicating the "From here to there" message. In a brainstorm session we explored the "here to there" concept for locations that the subway extension will open up for Torontonians. Places that will be accessible, that weren't before, via subway. We came up with a number of concepts that could be communicated with a quick line and an illustration.

To elucidate the “here to there” concept a bit more, here are some tag lines I wrote that didn’t make the cut:

  • Beer League to Big League
  • Selling Stocks to Tennis Socks
  • The Six to The Styx
  • Island Ferry to Wild Beast
